Start your own adventure with Hino

Ben Dawes, owner of Superior Concrete Contractors, and recent Hino Heroes winner

For many people, starting your own business can be daunting. The fear of the unknown can be so intense many decide not to go ahead. Not so for Ben Dawes, owner of Superior Concrete Contractors, and recent Hino Heroes winner.

Having been involved in the family concreting business since he was 18, Ben has decided to start his own business, and is the proud owner of a Hino 300 Series 616 Wide Cab.

We talked to Ben about starting his own business, travelling interstate, and the advantages of owning a Hino 300 Series.

Tell us about your business?

I have been involved with the family owned and run concreting business since I was 18. I have now more recently stepped out with my own independent concreting business - Superior Concrete Contractors. I've had a lot of fun designing standout branding for my business and now have a standout rig to match.

Our core team is small, but we support and utilise the assistance of other local sub-contractors, which is perfect, and helps us manage projects of all sizes.

Do you only operate within VIC, or have you branched out interstate?

I mainly operate in the Mildura/ Sunraysia region and across wider VIC, but have also travelled interstate to NSW, SA, and QLD when jobs have arisen.

One of the best things about travelling has been sampling a lot of good pub food along the way. I recently had the opportunity to travel out of VIC in the Hino, and it’s safe to say it was the most comfortable trip I’ve had to date!

What’s the largest project you’ve been involved with, and where was it located?

I have been involved in many large projects in the Sunraysia region, contributing to the steady commercial growth of the area over the years. There is no job too big or too small. We are proficient in perfecting commercial projects over 40,000sqm right down to intricate domestic projects such as footpaths, driveways and patios.

Why did you pick Hino for your business operations? 

Mainly for the peace of mind their trucks give. Having the Hino SmartSafe safety package, not to mention the convenience of an Automatic Transmission, I feel far safer in a vehicle like this. Also, I like the 3.5t towing capabilities of the 300 Series. It has more grunt than most other competitors I looked at in the light-duty range.

Which dealership did you purchase your truck from? 

I bought it from Johnsons Hino in Mildura. Because I own my own business, I like to support local family businesses whenever I can. Korey the salesman made the whole process really easy, while Ash and the boys nailed the fit out. I’m really stoked with how it turned out. Never thought I’d get excited about a truck, but I guess when you run your own show, it’s only natural. Is it just the one Hino truck you have operating?

I only have one for now, but I have big plans on expanding the business. I chose the 300 Series for its safety features and the fact my employees that don’t have a truck licence are able to use and enjoy the vehicle. My no.1 star employee Elvis (my Great Dane) also approves, he's absolutely loving the comfort and ample leg room.

Can you give us an example of where your Hino 300 Series has performed in a way you didn’t expect it to?

It’s the standard luxuries of the Hino 300 Series that have made a huge impact in my everyday comfort and satisfaction. The audible and visual safety features and reverse camera have ensured a really relaxed ride every time. The ergonomics of the cab and driver seat suspension have made a massive difference to my comfort, particularly my back. Especially after I’ve worked a 12 hour day.

If you could sum up your experience with Hino, what would you say to someone looking to buy a Hino? 

I have had a fantastic local team at Johnsons Hino behind me making the entire process stress free and enjoyable. The purchase of the Hino 300 Series, in many ways, has helped my business greatly…and improved my overall wellbeing.
